How to Choose the Right Water Heater for Your Hong Kong Flat

Choosing the right water heater affects your daily comfort for years. In Hong Kong, where bathroom space is limited and energy costs are high, the wrong unit can mean cold showers, wasted energy, or safety hazards. This guide helps you navigate the options available in the HK market.

Gas vs Electric: The Fundamental Choice

Gas Water Heaters

Gas water heaters are the most popular choice in Hong Kong, particularly in flats connected to Towngas piped supply. They heat water on demand, so you only pay for energy when the tap is running.

  • Advantages — Fast heating, unlimited hot water, lower running costs, compact wall-mounted design suitable for small HK bathrooms.
  • Disadvantages — Requires proper ventilation and flue installation. Must be installed by a registered gas installer. Not suitable for sealed bathrooms without windows.
  • Safety — Must comply with the Gas Safety Ordinance (Cap. 51). Since January 2020, all new installations must use room-sealed (balanced flue) models that draw air from outside and exhaust directly outdoors. Open-flue models are no longer permitted for new installations.

Electric Water Heaters

Electric models come in instant (tankless) and storage tank types. They suit flats without gas supply or where gas installation is impractical.

  • Instant electric — Compact and space-saving, but requires high electrical current (18–27kW). Many older HK buildings lack sufficient capacity — check with a registered electrician first.
  • Storage electric — Heats and stores 25 to 50 litres. Water is available immediately at full temperature, but you must wait for reheating once depleted. Common in village houses and older buildings.

Matching Capacity to Your Household

  • 1–2 people — Instant gas (10–12L/min) or 25L electric storage tank.
  • 3–4 people — Gas at 12L/min minimum, or 35–50L storage tank. Gas is more practical for consecutive showers.
  • Large family — Higher-capacity gas unit (16–20L/min) or separate units for kitchen and bathroom.

Popular Brands in Hong Kong

  • Rinnai (林內) — Japanese brand known for reliability. Their RSW series offers digital temperature control and safety features. Among the best-selling gas heaters in HK.
  • Paloma (百樂滿) — Premium Japanese brand with room-sealed models engineered for compact HK bathrooms.
  • TGC — Towngas's own brand, designed for HK town gas supply. Convenient one-stop installation and after-sales service. Competitively priced.
  • Sinsi (先仕) — Hong Kong brand offering budget-friendly options, popular in public housing.
  • Ariston — Italian brand known for slim-profile electric storage tanks designed for tight HK spaces.
  • Siemens and Bosch — European brands with premium instant electric models.

Key Features to Look For

  • Digital temperature control — Maintains consistent temperature regardless of flow rate changes. Essential for comfortable showers.
  • Flame failure device — Automatically cuts gas if the flame goes out. Mandatory on all gas heaters sold in HK.
  • Energy efficiency label — The EMSD runs the Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme. Grade 1 models save significantly on running costs.
  • Low water pressure operation — Older HK buildings may have low pressure. Some gas models ignite at pressures as low as 0.02 MPa — important for walk-ups.

Installation Requirements

  • Gas heaters — Must be installed by a Registered Gas Installer listed with the Gas Standards Office. They assess ventilation, flue routing, and gas supply. Installation costs HK$800 to HK$2,000 beyond the unit price.
  • Electric heaters — Install by a Registered Electrical Worker. Instant models may need a dedicated circuit. Storage tanks require secure wall mounting — a full tank exceeds 50kg.

Cost Guide

  • Gas instant — HK$2,500 to HK$8,000 (unit only)
  • Electric instant — HK$1,500 to HK$5,000
  • Electric storage (25–50L) — HK$2,000 to HK$6,000
  • Installation — HK$800 to HK$2,500

Maintenance

Schedule annual servicing by a qualified technician. For gas models, check the burner, heat exchanger, and flue connections. For electric storage models, inspect the anode rod every two to three years — replacing it prevents tank corrosion. Descaling is recommended in areas with hard water to maintain efficiency. A well-maintained water heater lasts eight to fifteen years.
