Where other families might dedicate an entire room as a safe play area, Hong Kong parents often work with 400 to 600 square feet total, where the kitchen, living room, and play area flow into one another. With thoughtful planning and modest investment, you can make your home significantly safer.
Window Safety: The Top Priority
Window falls are among the most serious child safety risks in Hong Kong's high-rise environment. Even a low-floor flat can be several storeys above ground.
- Window restrictors: These limit how far a window opens, typically to 100mm. Cable-type restrictors suit sliding windows; hinge restrictors suit casement windows. They cost HK$50 to HK$200 per window.
- Window grilles: Metal grilles complying with Buildings Department guidelines offer maximum protection. Professional installation costs HK$500 to HK$1,500 per window.
- Furniture placement: Ensure no beds, chairs, or storage boxes are positioned where a child could climb to reach a window. In small flats, this may require rearranging the entire room.
Furniture Anchoring
